Women’s Major Pennant Round 2 report, vs St Michaels at St Michaels
Posted on: 13 February
The Women’s Major Pennant team headed off to St Michaels for their return match on Sunday, tee off, 8am. Our pre-game meeting centred on showing resilience. We knew despite our win last week that St Michaels on their home course would be a significantly sterner test and it would be our ability to bounce back from adversity that may well determine our destiny.
Both team’s lineups were affected by invitations to the Webex event at Castle Hill, with Michelle Yang, our number 1, and the St Michaels 1 and 2 being recipients of invitations. Following a Rules briefing, tee off commenced in the following order: 5. Savannah Webb, 4. Lia Lavelle, 3. Annoushka Maikap, 2. Annabelle Elina, 1. Maddy Hegarty. Fortunately, there were no late injuries so our emergency reserve, Marie Claire Domingo turned her hand to venturing the fairways to support her team-mates.
At the turn, Annoushka was our only player leading their match (1 up), Lia and Savannah were 1 down, Annabelle 2 down and a late birdie blitz by Maddy’s opponent saw her 4 down. The team manager pondered the pre match message of resilience in the face of adversity, could we bounce back?
Clearly the playing group had been listening and the fight back commenced. Unfortunately for Maddy she was unable to get back into her match with her opponent continuing to show good form. Things had taken a turn for the good at the other end of the order with Annoushka increasing her lead and both Savannah and Lia fighting their way back in their respective matches. Annoushka defeated her opponent 5/3 and it was 1 all with three matches on course. Lia was our next match home winning 2/1 whilst Savannah secured a half point for herself and the team by squaring her match. Almost simultaneously Annabelle was defeated 3/2 with the final result ending in a 2.5 all draw.
It was a stunning come back and halving the away match meant we won the 2-leg contest against St Michaels 1.5 – 0.5 and secured a vital half away point.
We would like to thank our loyal caddies and supporter group. Without you our job would be so much harder.
Shirt Presentation
I have been approached by a few members about the lack of a shirt presentation at booking in for the Women’s team. The decision to present shirts to the playing group, privately, after booking in, was a decision made by me. The decision took into account, logistical issues with shirt order arrival and the unavailability of several players to be present at 6.30pm. In no way should this decision be interpreted as any sign of disrespect to the playing group by me, or the club. I have nothing but the utmost respect for our players and will always make decisions that are in the best interests of the Women’s Major Pennant team.
