Women’s Major Pennant Round 4, Vs NSW at Stonecutters Ridge
Posted on: 29 February
We hosted the return match against NSW Golf on Sunday. Our 2.5 – 2.5 tie the preceding week at NSW had given us confidence in defending “fortress Stonecutters”.
Our pre-match meeting identified the need to show grit and determination in the face of adversity. We knew NSW would be out for revenge and that their need to win to stay in the semi-final race would provide them with strong motivation. Following a rules briefing by Anne Korte we headed to the first tee.
The early holes were evenly contested, and it was clear the contest would be a tight one. At the turn we had established a slight ascendency. Savannah (5) turned 1 up, Lia (4) led by 2 holes, whilst Annabelle (2) was in control of her match at 4 up. Michelle (1) and Annoushka (3) were fighting hard in their respective matches. As the back nine progressed Lia established control of her match moving to 3 up through 13. Annabelle wrapped up her match 6/5, whilst Savannah continued to lead by a slender margin.
Annoushka and Michelle continued to fight and remained in touch with their opponents. Lia was next in, winning 4/3 and we had 2 matches in. On course we were behind in 2 matches, and Savannah continued to lead narrowly, the manager was developing more grey hairs. Savannah secured victory in her match and for the team 3/1, almost simultaneously Annoushka and Michelle were defeated 3/1 and 3/2 respectively.
Victory was ours 3-2, following a post-match team meeting at the “weeping tree” we returned to the club house for lunch with the NSW team.
The team remains undefeated. The defeat of St Michaels by the Australian on Sunday confirmed our semi – final berth with 2 sectional games remaining against the Australian. Our team is more than the 5 starting players on any given week, we are a squad of 8 players, every one of which is an equal and vital part of our success to date this season.
Thank you to our caddies and supporters. This Sunday we play the Australian at Stonecutters in what will be our last home game of the season, 7am tee off. As usual any support is greatly appreciated.
