ADAM’S ASPECT – 9th SEPTEMBER

If you are struggling with taking a divot, getting the club to brush the ground , please read on and try this drill. This drill will improve your ability to strike the ground.

“Baseball meets Golf”

This drill is very similar to a baseball swing, the baseball swing is the closest to the golf swing, however the golf swing is performed on a lower plane.

For this drill you will need just two golf clubs
Place one club on the ground , perpendicular to your target
Stand with your feet together, your golf club resting on your right shoulder for a right handed player and to the right of the club on the ground

The first move is to step your left foot to your left and over the club on the ground, try to step the width of your shoulders

The second move is to swing the club so that the club face makes contact with the ground on the left side of the club on the ground

The last move is to perform a full follow through similar to a baseball hitter

I like to take my right hand off the club, similar to how a good baseball hitter swings

Doing just 20 swings of this everyday will help your golf swing and strike point. For greater improvement try to perform 40 to 50 repetitions per day.

Please give it a go and let me know!

ADAM’S ASPECT – AUGUST 22ND

Bunker Play Basics

Your sand wedge or most lofted wedge, I use my 58 degree for sand shots, is designed to move through the sand. Firstly you must determine what type of sand you are playing from and secondly how to set the club face correctly depending on what type of sand you are playing from.

Basic #1

What type of sand are you playing from?

Learn how to feel the sand under your feet. Dig your feet into the sand. To simplify things there are 2 types of sand, either thin but firm sand OR deep, soft fluffy sand.

Basic #2

Understand how to set the Clubface so that the club can move through the sand, and get the ball out onto the green. If the sand is thin but firm, you can play this particular shot with a square or just slightly open clubface. If the sand is deep, soft and fluffy, you must play this particular shot with an open clubface.

SET UP

Play the ball off your left heel with the left toe turned open towards the target. Grip firmly and enter the sand 4-5 cm before the ball. This is the last basic – COMMITMENT. To play the shot correctly you have to move the sand and this will move the ball out of the bunker, so the shot must be played with commitment. Have a nice long follow through.

ADAM’S ASPECT – AUGUST 15TH

Hello members ,
They say that golf is a numbers game. Here are a few numbers that everyone who wants to improve must know.

Number 1
Have just 1 swing thought per discipline
1 for Putting
1 for chipping
1 for bunker play
1 for your full swing
Have just 1 swing instructor that you whole heartedly trust.

Number 2
If you want to improve, you must practice 2 hours per week.
Playing golf does not constitute as practice.
Only practice equals practice
Go to the driving range and hit balls. Go to the chipping green and practice chips and your bunker play. Practice your putting on the carpet at home or practice swing positions in front of a mirror. 2 hours per week.

Number 3
The 3 most important clubs are –
Your driving club
Your chipping club
And your putter. Practice with these clubs if you want to improve.

Putting Basics

If you are struggling with your short putting, please try the following “Hit and Listen” or “1.2.3.4.5”

Hit and Listen for the ball for the ball to enter the cup, keeping your head still

1.2.3.4.5 is a counting rhythm. Count 1 as you commence your stroke, 2 is the strike on the ball, 3.4.5 your head is to remain still for these 3 seconds.

Good luck on those short Putts – Adam

ADAM’S ASPECT – JULY 20TH

Hello Members,

It is The OPEN Championship week; I hope the wind will be blowing. To play shots under the wind please read on….

Grip down an inch, stand an inch closer to the ball and move the ball back just one inch in your stance. The swing will feel a little shorter on the Upswing due to the club being shorter. As you approach impact try to feel that you sweep the ball, don’t get steep into impact, if you get steep this will produce excessive spin and the ball will climb high. And finally with your follow through try to feel that your follow through is shorter, waist high will produce a very low shot. This is how Tiger produces his stinger shot, a must in the wind.

My favourite Open experience

I remember at The Open,  Miguel Angel Jimenez’s famous pre round stretching routine, with the cigar in his mouth. Please watch and enjoy.

ADAM’S ASPECT – OCTOBER 16TH

Chipping success – follow the four “S”

S number 1 – Set up

  • Soft hands
  • Sternum is tilted to my left

S number 2- Speed

The club must have a certain amount of speed so the club can slide under the ball. If there is not enough speed the club will dig into the ground and not slide

S number 3 – Strike point

Your strike point is the ground near the ball, use the ground to slide the club under the ball

S number 4 – Straight line

Ideally your lead arm, the lead hand and club shaft should form a straight line just after impact. As demonstrated by Phil Mickelson.

Great Golfing – Adam
