Women’s Major Metropolitan Pennant – Season Wrap
Posted on: 18 March
Our last 2 sectional matches saw us defeated both home and away by the Australian. Nonetheless our first 4 games where we remained undefeated had guaranteed our semi-final position.
This is the first year since the divisional structure was introduced to both Women’s and Men’s Major Pennant that a Stonecutters Ridge / Ashlar team has progressed to a division 1 semi-final.
Our semi final was played on Sunday against Concord Golf Club at Moore Park Golf Club. Whilst the day started with rain, by the time we teed off at 10.55am the rain had ceased, and we had overcast skies. Concord proved to be formidable opposition and by the turn had established leads in all matches. Whilst our players fought bravely, they were not able to stem the tide with the 2,4 and 5 matches going to Concord.
As per competition rules, once the match is determined, remaining contests were determined as squared matches and so, the result was 4-1 to Concord.
It is always a bit disappointing to lose on any day, and semi-finals are no easier. However, the team should be proud of their accomplishment in making the semi-finals ahead of other teams consisting of considerably lower handicapped players.
The team started the season with 2 goals:
- Contend for a semi-final position – this was more than achieved, not only did the team contend for, they, secured a semi – final position.
- Defend Stonecutters and win our home matches. – Exceptional wins against both NSW and St Michaels set up the possibility, unfortunately the Australian rained on that parade in the final round.
This year’s squad consisted of Lia Lavelle (Captain) Annabelle Elina, Annoushka Maikap, Grace Lee, Maddy Hegarty, Marie-Claire Domingo, Michelle Yang and Savannah Webb.
Our team highlights were defeating both St Michaels and NSW Golf Clubs across home and away legs and making the semi-finals.
The team would like to thank Stonecutter Ridge Golf Club and every member for the privilege of representing your club. A huge thank you to our caddies for their tremendous efforts (despite the odd buggy roll over at Moore Park😊😊) Thank you to our supporters and parents of our younger team members for transporting them to some far-away places this year. Anne Korte, Lady Captain has been at every game and refereed our home games, thank you so much Anne.
The team will be using our semi-final defeat this year as fuel for the fire for 2025, where we will push to go further.
